By 2050, it is predicted that nearly 50% of the worlds population will diagnosed with some form of myopia.

Why control myopia?

Myopia can progress throughout childhood, and is faster in younger kids. Higher rates of myopia can increase the risks of serious eye conditions in adulthood, such as;

  • Myopic macular degeneration

  • Retinal detachment

  • Glaucoma

  • Cataracts

Causes Of Myopia

  • Genetics

Genetics play a strong role in the chances of myopia development. Children with one myopic parent are 3x more likely to become myopic. If both parents are myopic this increases to 6x.

  • Close Work

Prolonged close work, especially when reading very close for long periods of time, is associated with a higher prevelance of myopia.

  • Time Outdoors

Evidence suggests that time outdoors reduces the chances of myopia development in children. That’s why we encourage at least 11 hours of outdoor time per week.

Unfortunately time outdoors is not affective when a child is already myopic.

FAQs

Do you offer myopia control options without a monthly scheme?

We have made the decision to only offer myopia control on a scheme because of the appointments necessary to ensure the treatments are working as effectively as they can.

At what age should I consider myopia management for my child?

The earlier that myopia management is started, the lower the expected end prescription is likely to be. That’s why we discuss myopia control options as soon as myopia is detected.

How long do I have to stay on the scheme for?

We require our myopia management patients to stay on the scheme for 4 months. After this, you can cancel at any point should you need to.

What makes an Optometrist a myopia management expert?

All of our Optometrists are highly qualified and experienced. Our myopia specialists have done further training, such as the British Contact Lens Associations Myopia Management Certification. This means that they are on a continued education journey, keeping on top of the very latest research and developments in the field.

Which option is best?

Every child is different. So there is no best option. Our most popular myopia management strategy is orthokeratology, because of the freedom that the lenses give. We can discuss the latest research in practice should you want to know more about each design.

How often do we see an Optometrist?

We see our myopia management patients every 6 months. Should there be any issues earlier than that, we are happy to see them sooner.
